Dreaming up this magical playroom was definitely one for the books! I had so much fun building upon a bright and summery room design, which instantly makes you feel happy.

My clients wanted to create a beautiful and functional space that would foster all different types of play for their daughters. So I started by delineating the basement into four areas; an arts & crafts station, a reading nook, a pretend play zone and an active play space. We established the pink and green colour palette by sourcing a stunning wallpaper, which offers such a beautiful sense of movement across the room. I wanted the playroom to have a fun and energetic feel, so we opted for a bold Louise Jones floral fabric for our custom roman shade and cushion, and added an unexpected checkered pattern on the floor with a pair of wool rugs. Because the play structure had to be built with an adjustable metal leg resting directly on the floor surface, we positioned two rugs side-by-side with a thick underlay for extra softness underfoot.

I am SO thrilled with the outcome of the play structure, it’s such a showstopper. I worked with Emily from Movement Rooms who brought my vision to life so beautifully. She is incredibly skilled and puts so much care into the construction and materials used. We incorporated a cushy couch and a climbing wall that leads to a cozy hangout nook. I intentionally wanted it to be tucked near the window to create a sense of wonder… like sitting up in a tree house! The space underneath the structure was the perfect spot for a pretend play corner, so we added some adorable brass bow hooks and a storage ottoman for costumes, and a small shelf to store play food.

To create the perfect arts & crafts setup, we brought in my favourite IKEA art table and paired it with four sage green chairs (which are wonderful in any playroom because they are fully wipeable and light enough for kids to move around themselves). Next, we repurposed an existing canopy to create a reading nook with a boucle bean bag in the corner. A BESTA storage unit provides lots of closed storage space for toys, games and art supplies and the top surface works nicely for displaying toy collections and books.

Several special accessories and textiles were sourced to coordinate with the overall palette. And I love the mix of materials that were considered as well; like wool, linen, boucle and velvet. This all adds to the layered aesthetic that has come to life so successfully. It’s was summer dreams are made of!

“Thank you again for your great work, I love the room and you were a pleasure to work with. I missed the girls’ initial reaction which was: Mama it’s beautiful, I love it. THANK YOU.”
