This elevated and laidback teen rec room was designed to be the ultimate hangout spot for watching movies and playing video games with friends, all while feeling thoughtfully put together. With clean lines, a timeless colour palette and classic aesthetic, this space has legs to last well beyond the teenage years.

We dreamt up this teen rec room with many functions in mind; from watching movies and gaming, to hanging out with friends, hosting sleepovers and working out in the adjacent gym. It had to cater to adults and teens alike, so we established a timeless design with a relaxed aesthetic that works for all ages! The sage green and camel colour palette feels very chill, and we added a few pops of black for a bit of edge. Special interests were incorporated through unique accessories, like surf flags and sporting paraphernalia, as well as gaming and dog referenced art prints, sourced especially for this pup-loving family.

We delineated the basement into two main zones, the first being a dry bar area with lots of storage for snacks and games. The custom millwork, finished in ‘Pigeon’ by Farrow & Ball, was designed to fit an existing mini fridge and includes a hidden trash bin as well. I selected a tonal botanical wallpaper to add depth to the feature wall along with a floating shelf, vintage-inspired wall sconce and butcher block countertop. A round table with four green wooden chairs acts as the prefect surface for playing games or for casual after-school meals with friends. In the seating area of the basement, we repurposed an incredible oversized cloud sectional and added a two-toned linear rug and fun textiles to tie everything together. From velvet and wool, to plaid and stripes, the textiles add such a playful and eclectic touch to the room design. We repeated the same green colour on the custom 9-foot media unit, which houses gaming equipment, electronics and extra blankets. I am beyond delighted with the finished product and am happy to know this space is being so well loved and used!
